Mehrgodaz tundish nozzles brochure showing a metering nozzle, exchangeable nozzle system, three-plate gate system and their benefits
Technical reference for tundish metering nozzles, exchangeable nozzle systems and three-plate gate systems.
The brochure covers three distinct flow-control concepts: a metering nozzle, an exchangeable nozzle assembly and a three-plate gate system. Their descriptions are intentionally grouped below so that the relationship between the diagram and the explanatory text remains clear.
1. Metering Nozzle Fixed-orifice flow control using a wear-resistant internal insert.
2. Exchangeable System Upper and replaceable lower nozzle elements for flexible casting operation.
3. Three-Plate Gate Upper, moving middle and lower plates for adjustable or shut-off flow control.

Three Tundish Flow-Control Arrangements

Each arrangement controls molten steel differently and should be selected according to casting practice, required flexibility, safety considerations and equipment design.

01

Metering Nozzle

A fixed-orifice refractory nozzle, typically incorporating an internal zirconia insert within an alumina-graphite body, regulates flow through its bore diameter.

Main Benefits
Long and extended casting-sequence capability
Controlled and stable casting speed
Resistance to oxygen-lancing exposure
Consistent re-stranding performance
02

Exchangeable Nozzle System

A fixed upper outlet element transfers molten steel to a replaceable lower nozzle, allowing the lower flow-control component to be changed during the casting campaign.

Main Benefits
Improved casting-operator safety
Supports improved metallurgical quality
Enables longer casting sequences
Flexible flow adjustment through nozzle selection
03

Three-Plate Gate System

A movable middle plate changes the overlap between the openings of stationary upper and lower plates, providing adjustable flow control and shut-off capability.

Main Features
Precise adjustment of molten-steel flow
Compatible with process-control technology
Direct connection to downstream nozzle arrangements
Resistance to thermal shock and abrasion

Main Refractory Components Grouped by System

Grouping the components under their corresponding systems makes the diagram easier to interpret and avoids presenting unrelated product cards without context.

01

Metering-Nozzle Arrangement

Fixed-orifice regulation of the tundish discharge rate.

Metering Nozzle The calibrated bore controls molten-steel discharge according to nozzle diameter and operating head.
Zirconia Bore Insert A high-wear internal insert supports dimensional stability of the flow opening during casting.
Nozzle Body The surrounding refractory body supports the insert and integrates the nozzle with the tundish outlet.
02

Exchangeable Nozzle Arrangement

Modular upper and lower outlet components for flexible operation.

Well Block Supports the outlet assembly, maintains alignment and protects the surrounding tundish lining.
Upper Nozzle Transfers molten steel from the well block into the exchangeable lower outlet element.
Lower Nozzle A replaceable component that directs the casting stream and permits operational nozzle changes.
03

Three-Plate Gate Arrangement

Adjustable refractory plate assembly for regulating or stopping flow.

Upper Plate The stationary upper plate receives molten steel from the tundish outlet or upper nozzle.
Middle Plate The moving plate changes bore overlap to open, restrict or close the flow path.
Lower Plate The stationary lower plate completes the gate assembly and guides steel toward the downstream nozzle.
Operational Benefits

Benefits of an Integrated Tundish Flow-Control System

Simplified Installation Designed to support practical installation, setup and maintenance.
Inside or Outside Installation System configuration can be adapted to the tundish and equipment design.
Overflow Prevention Controlled discharge helps reduce the risk of uncontrolled steel overflow.
Process Monitoring Compatible system design can support automated monitoring and control.
Flexible Casting Practice Different nozzle bores or gate positions support changing casting requirements.
Applications

Typical Continuous-Casting Uses
