STA Commerce supports international enquiries for refractory lining solutions used in direct reduction (DRI) units, shaft kilns, rotary pelletizing kilns and pelletizing-furnace burner zones, coordinating technical requirements with relevant refractory suppliers. The product families covered here are high-alumina and alumina-mullite bricks, including andalusite and phosphate-bonded grades for the applications described below.
Refractory Requirements in Reducing Atmospheres
In the upper section of a direct-reduction iron shaft kiln, pellets and reducing gas move through the furnace. The lining must therefore resist pellet abrasion, gas erosion and the chemical effects of carbon monoxide.
The reducing-gas inlet and bustle region is one of the most demanding zones. Refractory selection in this area must balance thermal stability, abrasion resistance and compatibility with the reducing atmosphere.
DRI & Pelletizing Furnace Refractory Solutions
The following products cover the principal applications identified for direct-reduction iron shaft kilns, rotary pelletizing kilns and pelletizing-furnace burner ports.
High Alumina (Andalusite) Brick
An andalusite-based high-alumina refractory for zones requiring stable service in a reducing atmosphere and resistance to pellet-related mechanical wear.
Fired Phosphate-Bonded High Alumina (Andalusite) Brick
A fired andalusite high-alumina refractory using a phosphate-bonded system for demanding rotary-kiln lining service.
High Alumina (Alumina-Mullite) Brick
A high-alumina alumina-mullite refractory for special-shaped lining in burner ports and other zones exposed to concentrated thermal loading.
Recommended Refractory Qualities
This table summarizes the three refractory qualities and their principal application areas.
| Refractory Quality | Material Classification | Recommended Application |
|---|---|---|
| High Alumina (Andalusite) Brick | Andalusite-based high-alumina refractory | Bustle, bustle inlet and upper sidewall areas of direct-reduction iron shaft kilns. |
| Fired Phosphate-Bonded High Alumina (Andalusite) Brick | Fired andalusite-based refractory with a phosphate-bonded system | Refractory lining in the rotary kiln of an iron-ore pelletizing system. |
| High Alumina (Alumina-Mullite) Brick | Alumina-mullite high-alumina refractory | Refractory lining in the burner port of a pelletizing furnace. |
Typical Areas of Use
Direct-Reduction Iron Shaft Kiln
High-alumina andalusite bricks for bustle, gas-inlet and upper-sidewall zones exposed to reducing gas, abrasion and erosion.
Rotary Pelletizing Kiln
Fired phosphate-bonded high-alumina andalusite bricks for rotary-kiln lining subjected to mechanical and thermal cycling.
Pelletizing-Furnace Burner Port
Alumina-mullite special-shaped bricks for concentrated heat, thermal shock and burner-side lining service.
Information Required for Product Selection
Final refractory grade and shape should be selected according to the equipment design and actual operating conditions; product specifications and availability should be confirmed with the relevant supplier.
