Refractory Requirements in Reducing Atmospheres
In the upper section of a direct-reduction iron shaft kiln, pellets and reducing gas move through the furnace. The lining must therefore resist pellet abrasion, gas erosion and the chemical effects of carbon monoxide.
The reducing-gas inlet and bustle region is one of the most demanding zones. Refractory selection in this area must balance thermal stability, abrasion resistance and compatibility with the reducing atmosphere.
